Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
Under the leadership of the current Registrar the issue of examination questions being “leaked” before the examination date had been largely put to rest. However, there was still the vexed issue of cheating at some examination centres. We were approached to provide a solution.
Anecdotal evidence from staff and invigilator's of the examination board indicated that the most common form of malpractice was the use of mobile phones to transmit questions and receive answers.
Deploying GSM jamming equipment appeared to be the technical best solution. The not so obvious solution was finding jamming equipment that met the challenges of deployment.
When the specification sheet was sent to manufacturers and suppliers, we received some rather strange request for further documentation. It turned out that the criteria specified (Portable, able to operate independently for over four hours without access to mains electricity, shock proof to withstand transport over rough terrain, etc) was very similar to that expected of Military Standard equipment!!!
Eventually, we were able to locate a Swiss manufacturer that had supplied equipment to the Nigerian Armed Forces and understood why we had established the equipment criteria.
Needless to say, despite being given less than two months to identify, manufacture and deploy the equipment it was successfully trialled at a few centres and well documented by the media.
